The conversion of a technically and functionally obsolete gas
company buildingwas oné ofthewaysto preserve an otherwise
emotionally impressive, industrial complex in the center of
Ostrava. The building, formerly housing garages, storage rooms
and laboratories, was converted into a staff dining room,
a public café and a customer care center. Justifiable artifacts
were preserved while other technically obsolete constructions
were removed.
The overblown skeleton ofthe three-storey building was clad
with a frameless facade systém on the last two above-grade
levels. Sheets of aluminum and glass define the ashlar. It is
open where it meets the adjoining building, thereby making the
transition softer. The interior partitions are designed by opaque
and transparent planeš pursuing aesthetic, programmatic
and technical aims. A proportional adjustment of the vertical
structure resulted in an elevated parterre reflectingthe
functional interior segmentation. The inner ambience is based
on an interaction of the existing, awkward skeleton and the
precisely new cladding. Due to the low construction height, the
ventilation ducts and lighting fixtures are exposed. The new
layout integrates disparate functions solely by the layout of
the in-built block housing technical facilities and amenities.
A carefully thought-out orientation of entrances helped separate
the circulation flow of clients, staff, restaurant and café patrons,
deliveries and maintenance in a single communication hub.
Some of the construction materials ušed for the conversion
were concrete, polymerconcrete, aluminum, Alucobond, glass,
washable wall paint, Corian and structural glue.
